In orig. bag & brass-capped aluminum tube. [Cat. 2019] FB 190051 con-bs – This is an uncommon Dry Fly Accuracy Rod built by Buddy Powell in 1933-1936. Buddy Powell was the Jon Tarantino & Steve Rajeff of his time. He was one of the three sons of EC Powell, and a Champion Caster, but died in an automobile accident in 1936 at the age of 23.. He had only been fly casting in tournaments for 3 years, but he was doing Trout Fly Distance casts of 163 ft. before he was killed. Buddy Powell worked in the Powell shop with his two younger brothers, Clyde and Walton. He had his own ideas about rod design, and was allowed to taper and finish rods his own way. His hollow built rods had bronze silk tipped white and black on all guides & wraps. This rod is a Dry Fly Accuracy Rod, probably an A-8 X 1/4 taper. It is very fast and tippy. I cast it with a DT-7F Sylk, and it drove the line with a very narrow loop. It would be a great rod for casting at rings, but I would not like to fish it all day. The prior owner of this rod has used it extensively, because the grip is heavily soiled. Both original Buddy Powell tips have had new 5 in. tips spliced from the first snake guide up to the tip. The extra tip was probably made at the same time, but does not have the Buddy Powell Black & White tipping.. Both original tips have slight sets in them. The 1/2 in. short spliced tip has the tip snake guide placed on the wrong spline. It should be redone, although it is useable as is. Aside from the spliced tips, the rod is all original Buddy Powell in Near Fine condition. Complete rods by Buddy Powell are rare. I have sold over 2600 fly rods in my business, but only 180 rods by E.C Powell. I have had only 2 hollow built Buddy Powell rods. With noted faults, Very Good. $1650
