R 200002 3 1/4“ HARDY PERFECT WIDE. N/S LG; RH; Previously owned by DOUG MERRICK of WINSTON ROD CO. Cap. WF-7 + 100 yd. 6 oz. Dupl. Mk II Check with spares; Smooth brass foot 2 3/8 in. long; Ebonite Knob; Circular writing: “The Perfect Fly Reel” in circle around hub; “Made by/ Hardy Bros. Ltd./ Alnwick, England”; / “Pat. Nos. 24245 & 9281/ Duplicated Mark II” / Made Expressly for H.C. Golcher Co. / San Francisco”; 3 brass pins & brass nub in center of face plate; Circa 1928; Leaded finish.[Cat. 2020] R 200002 con-jc. – This reel was given to Jack Curtis of Sun Valley ID by Doug Merrick. Jack and Doug were avid fishermen, hunters, and golfers. Jack used to live in San Francisco. He and Doug fished the Dean River BC together for many seasons, hunted for chukars in Idaho, and golfed. Doug actually fished this reel on the Salmon River in Idaho and elsewhere. The H.C Golcher writing on the face plate is unusual; it is normally found on an internal plate. H.C. Golcher Co. was a San Francisco Sporting Goods store dating from the 1870’s to the1960’s. H.C Golcher was a Champion tournament fly caster from the San Francisco Fly Casting Club; he cast 140 ft. in 1902 in the Heavy Trout Fly Distance Event which held the record until the event was discontinued in 1918. He also cast a record 116 ft. in the Trout Fly Distance Light Tackle which held until 1923. This reel has some serious issues. A ½ in. piece of the frame next to the line guard is missing, so the guard does not stay in place. There is a crack in the base of the frame adjacent to the rivets holding the reel foot. The winding knob has been bent. The reel is unfishable because of the missing frame by the line guard. Finish uniformly worn to a very nice patina on this 1920’s reel. With noted faults, only Fair. $250
