P 100034. DVD: RIVERS OF A LOST COAST. Produced by Justin Coupe and Palmer Taylor. Narrated by Tom Skerritt DVD. 86 minutes. [Cat. 2020] P 100034 –A documentary on the decline of the once-great steelhead and salmon fisheries on the Eel, Smith, Russian and other California rivers. Justin Coupe & Palmer Taylor took over 4 years to bring it to fruition. The result is an extraordinary Ken Burns-Type documentary on the rise and fall of the magnificent steelhead and salmon streams of coastal California, as told by the fishermen who fished there from early in the 20th Century to the present. The Eel River had steelhead runs in excess of 100,000 fish in the 1930’s-1940’s; over 27,000 fish were counted at Benbow Dam on the South Fork in the 1940’s. With logging and road construction following WW II, the devastation was brutal and quick. Massive floods in 1955 and 1964 did further damage. The team interviewed many anglers, and told stories of both the living and the dead. Among the anglers are Bill Schaadt, Ted Linder, Bob Nauheim, Russ Chatham, Frank Bertaina, Mel Leven, Hal Janssen, Allen Curtis, Sterling Kelly, Lani Waller, Grant King, Hal Bennett, Chuck Campana, Tom Ungrin, Al Perryman, Dave Strong, and Peter Moyle, all friends of mine. I supplied a few of the b&w photos shown in the DVD and also was interviewed. The DVD also shows clips not included in the Final Cut, with pieces on C. Jim Pray, Art Dedini, Pete Schwab, E.C. Powell, Lew Stoner, Jack Horner, Harry Hornbrook, Karl Mausser, Lloyd Silvius , Jimmy Green, and Myron Gregory.. I knew all these people. Many other fishermen are featured in the film. I caught my first steelhead on the Eel River in 1949, and practically lived on the Eel while attending college at Humboldt State from 1951 to 1960. We all thought it would never end. This documentary honors the fish and the rivers.
